Now anyone who has ever been on a photoshoot, video shoot, event filmed for TV, film production or any other situation where there are cameras recording what’s going on to present to someone else, you have seen 1st hand how many things have to happen to get something completed! Now regardless of the size of your production there are three things that will make or break your production!!
- Lighting - good lighting carries emotion, creates a mood, and establishes a character. Your team should have a pretty good idea of where you’re going with this going after a solid brainstorm and preproduction meeting or two. Just keep in mind this is more than getting the image overexposed or underexposed - it’s the key part that makes it “bright and airy” or “soulful and nostalgic” or whatever else you want to say to your viewer. Lighting sets the look, feel and mood.
- Good Sound = Good Video - I hate to say it but one of the most neglected parts of a good video is quality sound. Poor sound will make your video look amateurish - it may look amazing but if it sounds like it was recorded on some computer speakers - it will effect your viewers' experience. Some food for thought, hire an audio guy or if you choose to go at it yourself use the right tool for the right application. We use lav mics for interviews, one on one videos, and even some training applications. Boom and shotgun mics for wider shots or where you do not want to see the mic on your talent!
- Track ALL Changes - Let me say that again, TRACK ALL CHANGES. Change is a fact of life and I’ve never been on a production that we didn’t have on set changes. The key is to record them so that everyone on the team knows what it is. Add a shot? Write it down. Drop a question in the interview? Write it down. Strike a prop that’s in the script? Write it down. You get the idea. Tracking will help in the edit.
Good luck and we’ll see you on the interwebs with your incredible production!
